Late 19th-century Assamese nationalism blossomed as the educated middle class formed organizations to protect their linguistic and cultural identity. The Asomiya Bhasa Unnati Sadhini Sabha and its journal, Jonaki, sparked a literary renaissance. Concurrently, groups like the Assam Chatra Sanmilan, Ryot Sabhas, and the Assam Association mobilized the public to address socio-political grievances. In 1921, the Assam Association merged with the newly formed Assam Provincial Congress Committee, integrating Assam into the national freedom struggle. Consequently, Assam actively participated in the Swadeshi, Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, and Quit India Movements.
